Beholders are the creations of Xa'an. They come in a variety of forms, the majority of which are per the Monster Manual. Light Tyrants are an additional variation presented in Lords of Creation.

Beholders were created in the Vorpal Cascade by Xa'an and many still live in those asteroids. However, one was sent to earth where it became Grey-Fang Mountain and from there the Beholders entered the world. They first enslaved a few Shadar-Kai but their expansion was quickly checked by the Eladrin, who attacked them and shattered their home. Because of this Beholders learned that human-shaped creatures are bigoted and hateful of them. Beholders harbour a particular hatred of Eladrin because of this as well.
