Gnomes are short, curious creatures who have an innate connection with language.
Gnomes came to being when Siccadan furiously wrote down every word in existance. As he wrote, words began to dance around him, and eventually took form as Gnomes. Siccadan was pleased with his creation, and began to teach them, and for a time, the gnomes expanded.
Eventually, Siccadan left the world for a time, and the gnomes were largely forgotten. Then two gnomes, Sneak and Quiet, went to the Loremasters' keep to find new words for their people, and accidentally created the god Nixis. Nixis has now adopted the gnomes as his own, and watches over them until Siccadan returns.

All Gnomes have an inherent love of Language and of Nature. Gnomes use badgers as domesticated pets for a variety of tasks. All villages are run by a Speak, and each individual Gnome takes on a name that corresponds to his duties and roles.
Gnomes are named after words, or rather, they take as a name a word that describes them well. As such, there are no real male/female name distinctions.
